Canada: Frontrunner of Urban SDGs

Cities in Canada and around the world are already spearheading innovative and transformative solutions in many areas of sustainable urban development and environmental sustainability, including energy, transportation, water, and waste management, gender equity, access to housing, health care, poverty, and disaster risk reduction. Cities are also increasingly joining forces and learning from each other to collectively strengthen the efforts to achieve Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and SDG 11, “Make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable”

The World Urban Pavilion in Canada is supporting these efforts by fostering city-to-city partnerships, the exchange of innovative and transformative approaches, and the development of urban pilot projects in Canada and in developing countries.

What is the 100+: Canada's Profile on Urban SDGs?
 

The 100+: Canada’s Profile on Urban SDGs project identifies, assesses, and catalogues completed innovative and transformative urban examples of Canadian cities, communities, and organizations for sustainable urban development. These 'made in Canada' urban projects are to be presented as transformative actions in the social, economic, environmental, cultural, and governance components of city development. This will contribute to Canada’s aspiration as a frontrunner for sustainable urbanisation and create synergy across the nation. These urban innovations will also be shared with countries and cities across the globe and support city-to-city learning.

The 100+ project is part of the Pavilion’s flagship program, known as Canada: Frontrunner of Urban SDGs. This program aims to bring all Canadian urban actors under a common national agenda for the achievement of SDGs. The Canada Frontrunner initiative supports innovative, transformative, and creative ideas to make a positive social change in society by creating awareness on urban affairs and develop transformative actions. This initiative is the beginning of a foundational basis to help identify and invest in Canadian urban innovations by implementing and supporting the development of pilot projects working toward equity and urban prosperity, the reduction of poverty and inequality, and addressing climate change. Canada’s leading cities, communities, academics, social organisations, and the private sector will be mobilized to support Canada as a frontrunner in urban innovation and transformation

Announcement of the 100+: Canada’s Profile on Urban SDGs

The 100+: Canada’s Profile on Urban SDGs was announced on Oct 3, 2022 during the 4th Urban Economy Forum. Honourable Ahmed Hussen, Minister of Housing and Diversity and Inclusion and Lisa Williams, Vice President of Strategy, Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation joined the announcement and called on other urban actors to share their inspiring ‘made in Canada’ urban innovations and transformations for sustainable urban development.
